Teeth are bones, and their health starts with what we put into our bodies. Children’s teeth are constantly growing, and the right foods can help ensure their smiles are strong and healthy.
What foods can promote healthy smiles for children?
Dr. Julie Cichoracki shares some of the best foods to support your child’s dental health.
Calcium-Packed Foods
Calcium is critical for bone development, which includes teeth! Getting enough helps make sure kids’ teeth are strong, durable, and healthy.
Milk, cheese, and fortified plant-based alternatives like almond milk provide the calcium needed for strong enamel. Cheese specifically neutralizes acids found in the mouth as well.
Crisp Fruits and Veggies
Crispy vegetables and fruits make great, healthy snacks. They are good for overall health, but also for teeth. Apples, pears, and carrots are great for teeth because their crunch helps remove plaque while stimulating saliva flow. Saliva acts as a natural defense against bacteria.
Nutrient-Rich Nuts
Nuts, like cashews and almonds, are filled with minerals like phosphorus. Phosphorus helps repair tooth enamel. Not to mention, nuts are also a satisfying, healthy snack that kids love. Mix them into trail mix with raisins and a few small chocolate bites, switch things up with nut butters, or simply give a small handful of nuts.
Lean Protein
Chicken, turkey, and eggs are excellent sources of protein. Protein is a building block for overall growth, and essential for teeth as well. They also contain phosphorus and other nutrients that keep teeth and gums strong.
Yogurt and Kefir
Fermented dairy products provide calcium and key probiotics that balance oral bacteria. They’re a tasty way to support both gut and oral health. Serve them plain, add berries for an antioxidant boost, incorporate them into a smoothie, or add some granola for a bit of crunch.
Limit Sugary Treats
Sugar is a major culprit for cavities. When it sits on teeth, it feeds bacteria that eat away at enamel. That’s why limiting sugar intake can help reduce the risk of tooth decay in kids. Offer fresh fruit, veggies, or nuts instead of processed, sugary snacks.
