Types of Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. Nitrous Oxide ( also referred to as “laughing gas”) is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe. Using Nitrous Oxide during your dental procedure can help to make you feel more relaxed. Many patients who are especially apprehensive of receiving dental treatment have been able to feel more at ease knowing that using Nitrous Oxide during their appointment is an option. With this option, you can breathe on your own and maintain control of all bodily functions. You may even fall asleep during treatment and not remember much of it.
Oral Sedation in Richmond
Oral sedation works well for moderate dental fears. Prior to your visit, you take your prescribed pill. It will help you to feel more relaxed and far less stressed. Due to its effects, you will need someone else to drive you to and from your dental appointment.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
For severe dental phobia cases, or more extreme treatments (like wisdom tooth removal) general anesthesia from an IV may be necessary. With this option, you are unconscious throughout the appointment. This option also requires transportation home after your procedure.
