As the chilly wind starts blowing across the fields here in Richmond, we all spend more time inside with hot coffee and soup. But the cold weather also brings out a few big myths about teeth.
Below, we break down common oral health myths that pop up in Q4 to help you best care for your smile.
Myth 1: Temperature sensitivity from cold Michigan air is just something you have to live with.
Not true. A sharp, zinging feeling when you breathe in cold air may be caused by exposed dentin. Receding gums or worn enamel can expose the sensitive dentin beneath. During a quick visit, we can get to the bottom of your sensitivity to determine the right treatment. We may apply fluoride to help seal the sensitive nerve pathways or advise gum treatment.
Myth 2: If your teeth don’t hurt, you don’t need a check-up.
Tooth decay is often unnoticeable until later stages. Bacteria eat away at the inner layers of your enamel long before they ever reach the nerve. By the time a tooth actually throbs, the decay is already deep inside. That turns a simple, cheap filling into a major repair. We can catch and treat decay in its earliest stages.
Myth 3: Your insurance benefits will help pay for next spring’s visit.
Most private insurance plans reset on January 1. Any benefits you didn’t use this year vanish at midnight on December 31. Use your remaining coverage for a fall cleaning or a quick filling to get the full value of what you pay for every month.
